The ambient light sensor (ALS), included in the VL6180X device can detect light as low as 0.1 Lux and as high as 100K Lux. This is without a filter window in front of it. With a filter window it can detect 0.1 Lux to 80K Lux as the window attenuates the light entering into the ALS sensor. The ST ALS firmware has flicker immunity over the full operating range and when used with recommended integration time settings this does not have any effect on the measurements. The field of view (FoV) of the ALS is symmetrical, meaning 90% on in the X direction and 90 degrees in the Y direction. The spectral response of the ALS is photopic meaning that it matches the human eye. The output format of the ALS is from 0 to 65,535 codes in a 16-bit register which are considered as “counts”. These “counts” can be converted to Lux through a simple mathematical equation which would reside in the HOST or application processor. Typical power consumption is 300 µA during the integration time for the ambient light sensor. The integration time for VL6180X ALS is set at 100 mS by default, but it can be as low as 50 mS or as high as 400 mS.
