Intelligent Power Switches Slide 2

What is an IPS? IPS stands for Intelligent Power Switch. It is a power MOS with some protections and diagnostics about the possible fault conditions of the switch (like over temperature, over current, under voltage etc…). Most IPSs are high side drivers so this schematic puts the load between the ground and the output of the IPS. Depending on the products, Vcc can go up to 36 V or 55 V. The input pin turns on and off the switch. An IPS is designed for industrial applications in very harsh environments. An example of protection is in the event of a short circuit on the load. The IPS will limit the current, and will report this fault condition.
