With the L6470/74, an SPI interface is all that is required, simplyfing the system from the software and  hardware point of view. Also, if the user has a platform with one motor and then needs to make an evolution with various motors, they can probably keep the same microcontrollers. The MCU is not heavily loaded as the decay timing calculations are performed in the L6470 and L6474.
