The SSP is the centerpiece of the Synergy Platform. It is a fully integrated and qualified software base with software components created by Renesas and their partner, Express Logic. There are no license fees and no royalties required to access all of this software and it can be used in an unlimited number of products. Recently, with SSP v1.3.0, Synergy added three application frameworks for wireless communication; Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy and cellular. Synergy also added middleware components to facilitate secure communications for remote IoT devices that are managed by a small controller, such as a microcontroller with relatively small memory and computing power. Secure communications are enabled by using Transport Layer Security, or TLS, that provides security three ways; encryption, data integrity, and authentication. That means those with malicious intent cannot see the content of messages, cannot alter the content messages, and they cannot pose as an imposter for the intended sender or receiver of the messages. Banks use TLS for secure commercial transactions. Another SSP middleware addition is for using the Message Queue Transport Telemetry protocol, or MQTT, that makes internet communication using the ubiquitous TCP/IP protocol suitable for constrained devices typically found in IoT sensors, actuators, monitors, and more where a small MCU is typically used. Wireless messaging with MQTT protocol brings efficiency with compact message formats and enables low power consumption by allowing IoT devices to be in low power mode more frequently. The powerful combination of TLS and MQTT is the backbone of secure IoT communication – now supported by SSP. One of the important things to communicate to customers, when it comes to what Synergy Platform delivers in the SSP, is that SSP is organic - it will continue to grow and improve over time with more valuable functions being added without increasing the price paid for the Synergy MCUs. For example, if a customer chose to license software for TLS and MQTT independently, they would pay thousands of dollars and spend many resources to integrate and test this capability. If they had to create it from scratch, it would take man-years of work to develop and test the capability. Renesas Synergy™ will continue to expand the software offering in SSP by providing more capabilities across the entire range of Synergy MCUs.
