The A/D Channel select register(s) are used to control whether an individual channel is converted or not. Each bit in the register corresponds to an ADC channel (ANS00 controls AN0 and ANS15 controls AN15). The register should be set when the ADC is not converting, meaning the AD Start (ADST) bit should be a “0”. When a scan is started all the channels that are enabled for conversion will be converted and the results will be stored in the corresponding AD data register. When a temperature or voltage reference input is to be converted all channels should be configured to not convert, which is done by writing “0”s to all the bits in the ADANS registers. The ability to select individual channels to be converted is different than many ADC blocks which allow the scan range to be set but do not have the ability to enable or disable individual channels within that range. Because the Channel Select register can select single or multiple channels to convert it is not necessary to have a one-shot mode of operation.
