As with other new RX devices, Renesas always strive to maintain maximum pin compatibility from previous devices. While this is not always 100%, Renesas continues to state that they provide substantial pin compatibility to enable transitions from older devices to the newer RX140. Also, they provide detailed “Differences” application notes as migration guides to help speed along the conversion process. Especially for RX140, Renesas was able to maintain pin compatibility with the RX130 for the system control terminals and cap touch terminals. In addition, the terminals for 3-phase complementary PWM output are arranged together for optimal positioning for motor control applications. Finally, Renesas was able to increase the number of I/O ports by one in the 48-pin package and by three in the 64- and 80-pin package, allowing more connections to sensors and other external components than earlier parts.
