Serial GPIO Peripheral Slide 7

Designer Engineers often find themselves dealing with a project that requires the use of peripheral components having proprietary communication protocols. These protocols may be synchronous or asynchronous, may include daisy chaining address schemes, may be full duplex or half duplex, or may be implemented in single or multiple data lines. NXP’s Serial GPIO module is an excellent solution for emulating such interfaces in a dedicated hardware. Historically, engineers have toiled over writing software that bit-bangs these protocols, resulting in time consuming loops that can fully consume the CPU and usually inhibit the processing of interrupts from other key systems.
