The PCA9685 driver has 16 LED outputs which may be used for color mixing, driving a string of LEDs in high-current, high-voltage applications and for controlling the PWM input of a DC-DC converter that drives a string of LEDs. This diagram shows a typical application for the PCA9685. The PCA9685 is similar to the PCA9635, except that is has no global PWM. Some other features that are unique to the PCA9685 are 12-bit PWM resolution for 4096 steps of individual LED brightness control. The PCA9685 PWM frequency can be adjusted from 40 Hz to 1000 Hz as compared to the fixed 97.6 kHz in the PCA9635. The PCA9685 allows synchronization of multiple devices via an external clock input. Finally, the Power-On Reset (POR) default state of LED output pins is LOW for the PCA9685, but it is HIGH for the PCA9635.
