I2C is becoming a popular method for controlling multiple devices within the same board or across boards. There are many devices that use I2C as a main interface to the host, and this bridge can be easily used to control these devices. SPI is a matured and well understood bus; many, if not most of microprocessors and embedded processors support this interface. These devices allow the processor to add support for I2C.
