These devices can be used in application where a UART is needed, and because of the nature of the serial bus interface the number of connections between the host and the UART are greatly reduced. This allows smaller packages to be created, and that make them ideal for cell phone, battery-powered devices. They can also be used in the typical UART applications: point of sale, Bluetooth/GPS interface, and IrDA applications.
