In many industrial applications, a 24V backplane voltage is very common. The backplane is often isolated to prevent the differential in the ground planes, especially when there is sensitive analog on one side and a high degree of switching or noise generated on the other side of the isolation. In these rugged environments, the 24V can experience voltage transients that can be clamped with an external transient voltage suppressor (TVS) to prevent damage to the regulators downstream. An alternative is to use a high input voltage regulator such as the MIC28304 (up to 76V max) that can handle these transients, which eliminates the need for the TVS, saving board space and cost.
