To prevent this, a pull-up resistor is connected to the controller with the WP pin as shown on this illustration. This setup prevents writes during power-ups and power-downs by always keeping the WP pin high when the pin is not explicitly driven. When a write is actually required, the WP pin must be driven to logic 0 by the master which adds a degree of protection to the design by using just one resistor and one MCU pin.
