Ethernet-Slide7

There are some concerns with connecting a 10 (Mbps) node on a 100 Megabits per second network. For example, hotel chains that wish to use Ethernet to remotely control the embedded applications in each room. Especially given the need to maintain maximum connection speed for the business traveler who needs to access the Internet and send or receive e-mail with his/her home office. The important thing to consider is that the 10BASE-T Room Controller will not talk directly to the business traveler’s PC. Rather both will have direct connection to a switch in a concentration room. In order to maintain conformance with IEEE specification, network switches will always need to be backward compatible and provide auto negotiation between the speeds of the network. In this way the 10BASE-T nodes will be on the back end of a switch and never degrade the performance of the network.
