VoIP Phone adapters provide an RJ-11 connector interface for a common phone and also a RJ-45 connector for Ethernet. Principally the application consists of a higher performance MCU which takes care of the voice compression and decompression. The micro interfaces to an Ethernet controller which sends and receives the voice packets over the Ethernet. Existing controllers on the market are large and typically have packages with 80-100 pins. The Microchip solution within a 6x6 QFN package offers space, complexity and system cost savings.
