According to VDC, a technology market research firm, Ethernet’s presence in the embedded bus market has experienced significant growth. In 1998, Ethernet was only 8% of the pie. By 2004, it grew to 24% while the other busses including Profibus, Device Net, and Fieldbus saw little or no growth. Other growth initiatives including voice over IP, a disruptive technology which looks to displace the POTS telephone system, or the North American Food Equipment Manufactures or (NAFEM) which uses Ethernet to as a physical layer to connect commercial appliances in fast food kitchens or bakeries, or industrial automation which is looking at ways to make Ethernet the solution of choice, all are market drivers which will propel the wide use of Ethernet in applications other than PC communications on a network.
