Ethernet-Slide5

The embedded Ethernet, datacom market has its origins in the PC market. The bus is shared and Carrier Sense, multiple access or carrier detect or CSMA/CD is used to gain access to the bus. Bus speeds of 10 and 100Mbps are common and packet sizes are up to 1500 bytes. The embedded control market requires real time control and therefore low latency and deterministic response. Data rates are typically less than 1Mbps and packets are less than 8 bytes. An implementation of Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees timely delivery for Ethernet networks. Network switches and routers enabled the big breakthrough to allow Ethernet to be used in real time applications that require deterministic response. Switches prevent any collisions from occurring and the capability to store and forward ensure that the channel is always available. With this configuration, communications between any 2 specific nodes are not impacted by other traffic on the network.
