In summary, the 24 V field side digital outputs from sensors in PLCs and distribution automation equipment must be level translated to 5 V on the control side. Because customers expect higher channel count and more integrated features into a smaller form factor, a traditional discrete design with a resistor divider will not be able to meet these requirements. While it is simple in nature, this design draws unnecessary power from the field power supply, causing heat build-up in the module. Also, one optoisolator per channel is not practical as this will limit the channel density in the module. The MAX31910 through MAX31915 are excellent upgrades to this approach. The MAX31910 to MAX31913 serializers/translators eliminate the need to have an optoisolator per channel and reduces it to three, saving power and board space. They also incorporate a robust CRC for reliable data transfer. The MAX31914 and MAX31915 parallel translators enable customers who prefer this architecture over a SERDES approach. Customers truly have a large breadth of Analog Devices digital input product to choose from that translates, and conditions 24 V digital output of sensors and switches used in industrial, process, and building automation. This family of eight channel digital input devices have the power dissipation, especially with the ultra low power mode, and integrated features that enable next generation digital input designs.
