The 24 V digital inputs to a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) must be level translated to a voltage the PLC controller can process. The traditional approach to this is a simple resistor divider. While this method is low cost and simple, it draws significant current from the field voltage. While power dissipation may not necessarily be a concern in industrial automation equipment, the resulting heat buildup from the resistor divider certainly is, especially as module channel density increases. Hot spots in the module could limit the number of channels in a given module. Additionally, this approach requires one opto-isolator per channel, which increases cost, component count, and power dissipation.
