Lumex reviewed the design with their team and identified the complexities that were creating the challenges. The existing design called for heat seal connectors between the LCD and PCB and for cable between the PCB and the mother board. With this many connections, the chances for errors in manufacturing were significantly increased. The Lumex team changed the design so that rather than having the electronics on a separate PCB, they would use a Chips on Glass (COG) display with a flex cable that would run directly to the mother board. By using the flex cable, Lumex was able to create the connection across the 3 inches and also solve the issue of tight pitch requirements for mounting the display. The Lumex team was able to provide a trouble free solution by understanding all of the challenges in the application and keeping the design extremely simple.
