Now, the arrival of 24 GHz technology. The 24 GHz solutions are especially tailored for advanced motion detection as they deliver the best performance. K-Band radars for motion detection have been proven in security, traffic, industrial, and automotive applications over many years. Current innovations demonstrate unique development improvements. Innovations and experience can now be transferred to other applications such as motion detection. Implications of these advancements are lower cost of the radar sensors. As a result, 24 GHz radar options have become a new and dependable option for motion detection applications. However, is the 24 GHz the new 10 GHz? This question is not so simple – it depends on the individual application requirements and specification prioritization. Therefore, before changing from 10 GHz to 24 GHz, it is critical to consider their differences. While 10 GHz frequency band harmonization is limited, 24 GHz radar sensors can be used worldwide without the need of different product versions for specific countries. A clear benefit of 24 GHz radar is the better speed resolution. Due to the lower frequency, 10 GHz radar waves are able to penetrate walls - this could be a benefit or hinderance depending on the use case. Concerning product design, 10 GHz radar solutions require shielding integrated into a back-side enclosure and are significantly larger than 24 GHz devices. In summary, it is apparent that 24 GHz has established many advantages for most of the typical motion detection applications principally because of improved functionality and performance. However, in some cases, the economics of 10 GHz may still be a consideration.
