Radar for Motion Detection

Radar is an established product on the market. In particular, 10 GHz radar solutions have been in direct competition with PIR motion detectors due to similar pricing. However, why has the industry changed, adjusted, and accepted higher pricing for radar sensors? The reasons are the extensive benefits in performance, design, function, and application potential. Radar technology offers precise measurements even at lengthy distances. They accurately capture motion of objects, animals or human beings. Devices are capable of detection through various materials. Their excellent performance is also a result of additional capabilities such as velocity or distance measurement which can be used to optimize detection reliability. Radar-based motion detection is also known for robust and reliable performance. The technology works independent of weather or light interference, so it is perfectly suited for indoor and outdoor use. Atmospheric disturbances in harsh environments such as dust, vibrations, steam or dirt do not affect motion detection functionality. Extreme temperatures like heat or cold present no problem for radar sensors. Another optimal characteristic of radar waves is they can penetrate various materials. For example, radar sensors can be covered with different kinds of plastics, so it is possible to build a housing or to integrate the radar device in existing product designs. Additionally, dirt, graffiti and bubble gum (due to vandalism) does not affect functionality. Another benefit is sensors do not need regular maintenance. These advantages of radar present product designers and engineers more design and application flexibility, advanced features, and improved performance.
