The i.MX application processors have been on the market since 1995 and are now on their sixth generation. i.MX is targeted for display centric devices and the i.MX 6 series was also designed with this in mind. There are three key differentiating values that the i.MX 6 platform provides. The first of these is power and performance leadership through the implementation of Cortex-A9 with four cores as well as a 64-bit memory bus. Through the integration of hardware accelerators for graphics and video, i.MX 6 provides maximum performance with reduced power. Secondly, a unique and key value that the i.MX 6 platform brings is scalability; a portfolio of devices with single, dual and quad core offerings that are all pin compatible. In addition, NXP integrates features to provide flexibility in design. Peripherals, such as Gigabit Ethernet, PCI express, Serial ATA, USB with PHYs, HDMI, LVD, and EPD are examples. The integration of power management provides a unique way of reducing the complexity of the system as well as the overall BOM cost. This scalability enables a single software investment for two different development efforts: one platform for different tiers of products or one platform for different applications. i.MX also features the value of providing trusted technology. This means that the portfolio will be guaranteed for fifteen years life cycle support. It is also important to note that with NXP’s history of automotive involvement, the i.MX 6 platform was designed with auto grade quality practices. To address the need for system solutions, this platform is supported with market targeted development platforms as well as software.
