A self protected MOSFET is used in a circuit in a similar manner as a standard discrete MOSFET. It is turned on by a logic ‘high’ level, 3.3V or 5V depending on the device. However, unlike a standard MOSFET, the self protected MOSFETs input terminal draws a small current of 60uA or 120uA, at 3.3V or 5V respectively, in order to power the protection circuitry. A self protected MOSFET is turned off by a logic ‘low’ of less than 0.7V. At this voltage the device passes very little drain current (ID).
