The output characteristic graph here illustrates the behavior of the current limit circuit. The steep lines on the left hand side of the graph show normal RDS(ON) behavior. The peaks in the characteristics are where the over-current protection starts to reduce the internal gate drive. The essentially flat regions to the right show where the device is limiting drain current (ID) almost independently of VDS.
