Automotive and industrial applications can be subjected to very harsh electrical environments and must be tougher than a typical consumer application. The figure on this slide provides the classic illustration of an automotive application. The nominal 12V DC battery of a vehicle can deviate between 6V and 125V due to: crank voltage (engine starting), load dumps and transients up to +/-125V, or jump start and reverse battery conditions of 24V/-24V.
