The ATmega128RFA1 has several accelerators integrated in hardware. These accelerators offer the possibility of a more efficient MAC software implementation, including reduced code size, and may allow operating the microcontroller at lower clock rates to further save power. The figure on this slide shows an example of transmission of a single data frame with acknowledgement reception from the other party. The microcontroller is in active mode preparing the RF transceiver for transmission of a data frame (MCU pre-processing phase). The MCU pre-processing phase includes configuring the transceiver, uploading the data frame, and initiating the transmit command. From this state, the microcontroller can now go back to sleep while the transceiver handles the frame transmission without any interaction from the microcontroller.
