Even though the ATmega128RFA1 has been designed with IEEE 802.15.4 compliance in mind, the device offers alternative higher data rates up to 2Mb/s. Using the higher data rates significantly reduces on-air time, thereby saving power. As shown in the example, on-air time is reduced from 2752µs, to 512µs for transmission of 80 octets using 2Mb/s instead of 250Kb/s. The higher data rates also enable applications requiring more data throughput, like audio and video transfer. The selection of alternative data rates in the ATmega128RFA1 does not affect any other functions. Thus it is possible to run all features and operating modes of the radio transceiver in various combinations.
