Modular coaxial type relays are popular in higher end RF test equipment and have very good RF performance but are large in size, have limited cycle lifetimes, and need large drive powers. Smaller EMR/Reed switches are also widely used in test instrumentation but have limited RF bandwidth and cycle lifetimes, are still relatively large and require external driver circuits. In summary, relay technologies are significantly limited in size, performance, drive power and have a lack of switch configurations. The Analog Devices MEMS switch technology brings many advantages over relays. This technology offers wide RF bandwidths, very low drive powers, 1 Billion cycle lifetime, fast switching speeds, high linearity, low Ron and all in a small SMD form factor.
