Another name for a Pulse Oximeter is a Plethysmograph. A Plethysmograph is an instrument for determining and registering variations in the size of an organ, limb, or part resulting from changes in the amount of blood present or passing through it. The concept was first introduced in the 1930s. Today, the technology is much more complex than simply measuring light absorption through a finger.
