Mounting Types

So far, customers have learned that Lightpipes work in combination with a light source to transmit light from point A to point B. Since lightpipes (and light sources) are static panel elements, their position and mounting type need to be carefully specified by designers in order to achieve the desired optical purpose. There are two major lightpipe mounting types, board mount and panel mount. Board mount lightpipes are directly mounted onto the PCB and on top of the light source by using a spacer/mounting element in-between. The height of the mounting element determines the space between the lightpipe and the light source. Panel mount lightpipes on the other hand, are directly mounted into the indicator panel board or exit point. This design usually allows for reduced assembly time as these lightpipes come with an inherent press-fit design. Light source and lightpipe positioning have a direct relationship. In general, the larger the gap between the light source and the lightpipe, the lower the amount of light that is transmitted out of the exit point.
