So what exactly is Medical-grade? Well, it is a specific type of product that is UL 60601-1 compliant (or IEC 60601-1 compliant in international markets). Additionally, it is a moniker for the only type of electrical product that is allowed to be used inside patient-care areas. (Incidentally, since medical-grade products pass the stringent requirements for use inside patient-care areas, they also pass the less stringent requirements for use outside patient-care areas.) All medical-grade products feature hospital-grade outlets and plugs. Hospital-grade in this context means the components are constructed to meet demanding healthcare environments. For example, the outlets feature greater blade retention than standard outlets, reducing the chance that equipment plugs can shake loose after they are connected. Hospital-grade outlets and plugs are easily identified by their green dot. Note: if outlets are grouped close together, only one may have a green dot on it.
