A sense resistor is the most common means to set the motor current. The best precision is provided when using a 1% type resistor, a 5% type will perform fine for most applications. The selection of appropriate sense resistors depends on following considerations. First, the maximum current to be driven into the motor. Use the peak value required; to get more power out of a motor, provide a boost current above the nominal current. Up to 50% more current is realistic for short time like acceleration phase. Second, the maximum power dissipation resulting from the selection of the resistor. A 0603 resistor is sufficient for a few 100 mA of motor current, higher currents require 0805 or 1206 and larger sense resistors to be used. Third, during normal run and standstill, most applications allow power reduction to 75%, or sometimes even 50%. In case the calculation does not give a well fitting standard sense resistor value, use the next lower value and use the current scaler (CS) parameter for adapting.
