Many point of load designs use a synchronous step-down DC/DC controller and external high-side and low-side power MOSFETs instead of a step-down converter with integrated FETs. This approach gives the power designer more flexibility over the design, for example when programmable current limit prevents over specification of the external components. In addition, the desired MOSFETs can be selected for the application. TI’s LM27402, 3 V to 20 V, synchronous buck controller with continuous output inductor DCR current sensing is recommended for the DC/DC controller solution. The accurate DCR sensing enables lossless current sensing and minimizes the inductor size. Designs reaching 93% efficiency are available on TI’s Webench tool.
