The use of a MIM shell was carefully considered by the design team. Although the MIM shell adds some additional cost, it provides important advantages: it allows the waterproofing of the connector in a reliable method, it ensures the lowest height by the integration of the metal shield and a waterproof structure in one part, and it provides a strong structure. The images on this slide illustrate the height stack up of a plastic overmolded µUSB connector vs. a MIM shell design. As can be seen in the left diagram, the shell required for the shielding of the connector adds 0.3 mm to the total thickness of the connector.
