Along with the IP68 sealed shell, the TE 2108877-1 connector provides a couple of important secondary features: the strong metal injection molded, MIM, shell provides the best possible strength against wrenching and other damage done by false plug insertion by the end customer. The connector is easy to match with a compliant seal due to the organic circular shape of the connector nose. The connector is equipped with an undercut, matching the plug latches, so it functions as the normal µUSB connector and keeps the plug mated as with the normal µUSB connector. The screw mounting ears allow the user to mount the connector straight to the device mechanics, enhancing the mechanical strength of the connector, and reducing the tolerance chain so the connector can be made waterproof to the device casing. The dip posts provide further enhancement to the wrenching performance. In order to achieve IP68 the connector has been sealed using a MIM shell. The stainless steel metal injected shell replaces the traditional stamped and formed shell which typically contains holes and is not recommended for waterproofed connectors. Along with the waterproof functionality the MIM technology can be used to create stronger shells, capable of withstanding higher wrenching forces than the traditional stamped and formed shells.
