Another possibility is to combine the current control and the power stage in a single IC. Several driver ICs implement this combination with either a single bridge in one IC or both bridges in one IC. One drawback to implementing the both bridges in one IC is that you have all of the dissipation for both bridges in a single package. The ICs that reach the upper end of the current are all single bridges in one package.
