For applications that require currents less than 3 amps and are driven from supply voltages less than 50 V the power devices may be integrated in an IC along with the gate drive, level shift and some control logic so that the microcontroller can connect directly to this integrated power driver. As we will see, there are a number of integrated drivers of various configurations that greatly simplify the design for small motors. For motors that require more current or are driven from higher voltages, it is not practical or cost effective to have a fully integrated driver. For these applications discrete power MOS or IGBTs are used for the power output and integrated gate driver ICs are used to provide the level shift and gate drive functions. This presentation will discuss the integrated driver ICs for stepper and DC motors and the gate driver ICs for the higher power applications.
