The electronically commutated motors all have a very similar block diagram of the control and drivers. For any of the motors there is some power conditioning circuit that supplies a DC voltage for the drive stage, this may be as simple as a rectifier and capacitor for some of the larger motors or may be a switching power supply to generate a lower voltage for some of the smaller motors. Generally the control is implemented in a microcontroller and that interfaces to the power stage. In the block diagram shown here, gate drive IC’s provide the interface between the power MOS or IGBTs and the control logic.
