There are several different type of modules in the market. There are modules that basically have only the radio, radio transceivers, there is no stack, no application service, and no command layer. So that means all of this portion will have to reside on the host microcontroller. In some cases it can be a benefit, but in a lot of applications using microcontrollers can be definitely a problem for designers because it requires a certain development time and a certain experience for the integration of TCP/IP application services. ST’s model is the one of a fully-integrated Wi-Fi module where other than the radio, ST has integrated a microcontroller, the TCP/IP stack, the application services, and the AT layer, so it is a fully-integrated solution and the user does not have to really know Wi-Fi to use the Wi-Fi module.
