The beauty of a power module is that designers are not limited to only one electrical topology (as they are with an IPM). A power module can be used to drive an electric motor (as a 3-phase inverter) or can be used for a generic power conversion stage (an n-phase interleaved PFC stage). Very complex topologies, like multi-level inverters, can be realized with a power module drastically improving the compactness of the board while reducing the parasitic elements that become more and more relevant as the power increases.
