ST identifies its intelligent power modules (IPMs) with a very simple name: SLLIMM™. It stands for: Small Low-Loss Integrated Molded Module. An IPM can achieve a very high level of integration. In the same package, there are more than 30 discrete components: diodes, resistors, capacitors, thermal sensors, gate drivers, and of course power transistors. Additional benefits are: a simpler layout, reduced BOM, and protection functions already implemented inside the IPM. A very important difference between IPM and PM is that an IPM always comes with gate drivers (the intelligent components). This is not true for Power Modules (PMs) because as soon as the power increases (usually PMs are used in >10 kW applications), power electronic designers prefer to have the flexibility to implement their own gate driving solutions.
