ST’s MEMS microphones use MEMS manufacturing technology that was developed for their motion MEMS devices such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. The proprietary packaging provides significant performance advantages, particularly in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and frequency response. What sets ST’s microphones apart from the competitors is primarily performance. ST has unique proprietary packaging technology and high performance sensors that allow them to provide microphones with a high signal to noise ratio, which is the primary measure of microphone performance, and wide frequency response. The frequency response is flat from 20Hz to 20kHz, basically over the entire audio band. The competitors, as can be seen on this slide, are not as good. The other advantage ST has is a large MEMS manufacturing capacity. What this means for customers is that ST can respond very quickly to changes in volume, and have a cost-efficient manufacturing operation offering competitive pricing.
