As with many new technologies that grow in popularity, the limits are continuously pushed and new applications emerge that requires greater flexibility. In September 2005, the IEEE agreed to begin reviewing new PoE specifications in order to enhance current PoE guidelines into a next-generation standard (IEEE 802.3at) commonly referred to as PoE Plus. IEEE 802.3at is likely to expand the current standard that has power on two pairs to requiring power in all four pairs.
