A current mode control has many advantages including an excellent output voltage regulation. Due to the architecture, the inductor is turned into a current source. With the inductor as a current source, the capacitor on the output has a single pole filter effect. This makes the loop easier to compensate than the voltage mode controller. Since current is part of the loop, current limiting is built in. There are disadvantages to using a current mode controller. For one, the transient response is slower when compared to a constant on-time regulator. Also, the current signal is often a very small value and any noise induced in the system can affect regulation.
