The voltage mode controller is a very well understood topology and it has a constant frequency, which are big advantages. However, the inductor and capacitor of the power stage form a double-pole filter and is hard to compensate. The compensation takes many components to achieve properly. In addition, due to the architecture of a voltage mode controller, COUT may have to be large to get acceptable transient performance.
