The goal for high cap replacement is to eliminate electrolytic cap usage wherever practical. Performance and price advantages of MLCCs are optimized if the board layout allows using the smallest size parts. In some cases the ESR (equivalent series resistance) of the MLCC is too low and a series resistor may need to be added. There are also some less frequent situations where a tantalum is still needed.
