A terminal is a very simple type of electrical connector that connects two or more wires to a single connection point. Hundreds of types of electrical connectors are manufactured for power, signal and control applications. Connectors may join two lengths of flexible copper wire or cable, or connect a wire to an electrical terminal. A terminal block is an electrical device used to join two wires and create an electric circuit. Terminal blocks provide a convenient means of connecting individual electrical wires (or conductors) without a splice or physically joining the ends. Terminal blocks are used to connect wiring among various electrical devices within an enclosure, or to make connections among individually enclosed items. Since terminal blocks are readily available for a wide range of wire sizes and terminal quantity, they are one of the most flexible types of electrical connectors available. An important consideration is how connecting or terminating wires is more difficult than simply plugging in a cable. Terminal blocks are used to secure wires, and can be arranged in a long strip. Terminals are useful in connecting wiring to a ground circuit or in the case of electrical power, for connecting electrical switches and outlets to the mains.
