Shown here is the recommended procedure of how to install SSM, the elastomer pad with PGS adhered to it. In preparing the SSM, usually packaged in a plastic pouch, the first steps are to carefully remove it from the pouch and to expose the elastomer side so that the protective film can be peeled off. With a clean PCB prepared (one that is free of foreign objects), apply the SSM solution to the target area of the PCB (the area where the heat is being diffused from). In standard applications, the applicant will use one's fingers to press the SSM material down over the components in the target area. For a more uniform application, it may be necessary to use a roller with heat. Ensure that the SSM material is completely pressed to the PCB. An ideal application will remove as many air gaps as possible, which reduces thermal resistance and increases the overall performance.
