MPU based designs are typically more complex than microcontroller designs because there is no on-board memory or integrated analog power management solution. Guaranteeing signal integrity for high-speed interfaces like memory and Ethernet can complicate PCB design, adding cost and susceptibility to EMI unless the appropriate precautions are taken. The lack of on-board power management generally requires an external power management solution, further complicating the design. Accessing multiple external components pushes the pin-count up for MPUs which are most often populated in BGA packages. More external components often means involving multiple suppliers, complicating the supply chain. Supply and obsolescence issues are also present, particularly on components such as DRAM and other memories, throughout both the design process and production stage.
