Recalling the equation for capacitance shown in this illustration, it can be seen that there are a number of variables that can change the capacitance produced by the touch sensors. The most important variables that will be discussed in this module are area and distance. From this equation, it can be seen that as the area of the plate increases, the overall capacitance increases as well. Conversely, as the distance between the plates becomes larger, the overall capacitance decreases.
